Artist Spotlight: Allison Spencer We are all surro Artist Spotlight: Allison Spencer
We are all surrounded by the astounding beauty of God's creation. Whether we to to recognize and give thanks for it is left up to each individual to choose their own response. My art is a result of my choice to recognize our Creator with a joyful expression of gratitude for the beautiful colors, forms, and patterns God surrounds us with at every turn.

What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
For the most part I work in acrylics. I am an emerging artist with lots to learn and lots to explore. Therefore, I dabble and experiment with anything I can get my hands on.

What is something we don't know about you?
I love being outside feeding/ observing nature and "painting" the landscape with flowers and plants.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
My favorite thing about ArtsCharlotte is the spirit of encouragement and support.

Artist Spotlight: Rosa Renteria  My art concentr Artist Spotlight: Rosa Renteria

My art concentrates on anything beautiful that catches my eye. My goal is to express a greater truth and I hope to do that through the objects, landscapes and people I paint. My inspiration has many names: Mexican-Latin-African-Asian-American culture, folk-art, and life. I love to express on paper the beauty I see in the world, along with the truth, redemption and pain-healing processes we as people often go through. Many of my pieces are also influenced directly by God and his word.
.
.
.
What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
I like to experiment, but for the most part I stick with watercolor, acrylic and pen.

Where is your favorite place to visit?
My favorite places to visit are the mountains of North Carolina and Mexico.

What is something we don't know about you?
I like to bike. I love chocolate, hot tea and rainy days. Lastly, I enjoy watermelon and a hot afternoon on a hammock.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
I love the community of artists! I enjoy talking and getting to see everyone’s work.

Artist Spotlight: Mary Kamerer The Carolinas affo Artist Spotlight: Mary Kamerer

The Carolinas afford a beautiful variety of landscapes, from the mountains to the sea, and I've become enchanted with capturing the charm and simplicity of life in the rural South. Bicycles rides and walks along our local greenways have inspired me to capture the natural beauty of the marshes, trees and flora that grows wild along the route in my work. Long drives to my hometown in Pennsylvania allow me to gather inspiration from the farmsteads of Virginia and West Virginia, and I frequently find myself taking “the road less traveled” to encounter a beautifully lighted landscape.

An emphasis on light and shadows can be seen in my impressionistic paintings of these landscapes and still lifes in my studio. A recent floral series gave nod to the beautiful light streaming into my studio and falling upon various floral arrangements. The shadows that developed were just as important and often the focal point of these paintings.

I'm embracing the idea of art activism or “artivism” for the ability to arouse the emotions in my viewer to take action. Whether it is to identify with the subject, to see the it from a new perspective, or to just to bring a new landscape to a viewer, I love the ability to alter my viewer's mind--even if it's for that one short moment.

.

.

.

What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
My medium is oil, but I have enjoyed doing a series in mixed-media.

What is something we don't know about you?
What you don’t know about me? I was a zombie in George Romero’s 1980s thriller, Day of the Dead. And I’m a pretty darn good cook.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
The best thing about ArtCharlotte is the camaraderie and connection between other artists in our community. Especially at a time when it feels like we are alone (and creating can be a very isolating endeavor) it feels good to have network of supportive friends with a common interest—and one that makes others happy is a boon!

Jeanie Mauney i Artist Spotlight: Jeanie Mauney

Jeanie Mauney is a local artist in Charlotte, NC. She has a love and passion for color that reflects well in her work. Her abstract style of painting allows her to show the contrast and blending of rich colors at the same time giving life to her subject. She has a talent for painting animals and giving character to each piece she creates. Her use of palette knife techniques gives her paintings texture and depth that is distinctly recognizable. God has given her this amazing talent and she loves giving back by teaching at rehab centers and other venues.

What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
Acrylic on canvas with paper and miscellaneous items for mixed media.

Where is your favorite place to visit?
My favorite place to visit is the Caribbean. It brings me much warmth, color and hospitality when visiting.

Is there something special you’d like us to know about you? A favorite hobby or interest?
I was a travel agent for 30 years. Trekking the globe (five continents) has brought me so much color, texture, and God's rich beauty into my paintings.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
The love and support from the lead team and all of its members. A sense that you are truly not alone in this interesting business.

Artist Spotlight: Kimberly McGuire As a professio Artist Spotlight: Kimberly McGuire

As a professional art director (graphic design) and a lifelong creative I relish opportunities to step away from my computer and step up to my easel. While I do enjoy experimenting, my first and most fierce love is drawing portraits. My favorite medium for expressing those portraits is oil pastels. Tapping into my child-like enthusiasm, they are messy, impressionistic, and imprecise. A dance of joining colors and drawing like your painting.

Ultimately, all of my art pieces are celebrations of tiny moments and big emotions. Colorful depictions of a child deep in an imaginative world starring his small car. Or an aggravated bird-watcher whose private moment has been intruded upon. I love the diverse spectrum of facial features, emotions and tones that encompass humanity. The combinations of which are truly infinite; a bottomless well for which I happily return day after day.

.

.

.

What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
Oil pastels and collage

Where is your favorite place to visit?
My favorite place to visit is a new place to visit. I love new adventures, meeting new people, trying new foods and drinks. Although, one of my favorite adventure memories was sitting outside a cafe in Grenada, Spain, drinking tea out of an ornate tea service set with my new husband, watching all of the people passing by. It was calm and comfort in the middle of hustle and history. Such a splendid concoction.

Is there something special you’d like us to know about you? A favorite hobby or interest?
I'm a mother of 3 small kiddos, and at the moment that hugely defines me. It's a definition I love and hate. I strive to remember who I am beyond the diaper-changer and the meal-maker. But I also won't trade these early moments for anything because I do realize they are fleeting and priceless.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
The genuine and sincere intentionality to help build each other up. To teach and share and grow one another.

Artist Spotlight: Nancy O. Albert The connecting Artist Spotlight: Nancy O. Albert

The connecting thread that runs through all of my work is the beauty of time-worn structures. For over 25 years I have traveled the back roads of New England and the Carolinas, photographing endangered urban and rural landscapes. I first worked in black and white using a medium format film camera. My more recent work is digital and in color.

In my photography I attempt to preserve that which is about to disappear. My images pose questions about what we as a society value and what we neglect or discard. These utilitarian structures- abandoned farmhouses, barns, storefronts and aging industrial sites- gain dignity as they slowly decay and are overtaken by nature. I have come to savor the colors I find at these sites– rust, layers of history revealed as paint is worn away, the greens of encroaching vegetation, all set against the blueness of the sky. As elements are isolated, objects evolve into pure form and they become meditations on the strangeness of the known world.

Do we only discover their true beauty as they are about to be lost?
.
.
.
What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
My current images are all digital photographs. I print all of my own work often using textured or watercolor paper. All of the images here are 16” x 20.”

Where is your favorite place to visit?
Any road I have never driven down or street I have not walked.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
I love that the group connects artists who may be involved in solitary pursuits. The recent Zoom critique sessions in the Visual Artists Community have been excellent.

Is there something special you’d like us to know about you? A favorite hobby or interest?
I am happiest when out exploring and though it sounds odd, I love doing research.

Artist Spotlight Penny Oliver Throughout my work Artist Spotlight

Penny Oliver

Throughout my working years, it had been my dream that one day I would have the time and space to "create art." Blessed to pursue my career in  the field of Interior Design, I found the passion for color and texture, creation of atmosphere and balance of space required much the same creative energy as used when approaching a canvas.

I now enjoy working with and combining several mediums; acrylic, watercolor. inks, oil, fabric, photography, charcoal, colored pencil and graphite. Like many artists, I have far too many art supplies and just a few finished pieces of art!

God blessed me with a husband who loves to travel to exotic countries; we now have visited almost 70 of them and have LOTS of photographs to prove it. I’m extra blessed to have 5 grandsons, and have LOTS of photographs to prove that as well.

MY PASSION is to spend time developing an artistic skill set that will allow me to create and share paintings inspired by all those photographs.

MY REAL GOAL is to leave quality works of art for my children and grandchildren and perhaps even great-grandchildren!

MY TRUE JOY has been in the encouraging of other artists to enjoy the journey of God’s gift of art.
.
.
.
What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
My favorite medium is the one which I have the least skill…Oils! I have practiced mostly with graphite, colored pencil, watercolor, alcohol ink, gouache, acrylic…I definitely am a collector of art supplies.

What do you like best about ArtsCharlotte?
The friendships and encouragement I receive from hanging out with other artists.

Is there something special you’d like us to know about you? A favorite hobby or interest?
My husband loves to travel….in the last 20 years we have visited 68 countries! I always carry a few art supplies when we travel…and have many, many journals filled with sketchbook memories.

Susan Card has a passion for color!

By making marks inside broad brushstrokes, adding and subtracting vibrant color, everything appears to be in motion. People often see things in the marks such as butterflies, faces, birds and so much more.

Her intention is to create a place for the viewer to have a moment of pause and a space to imagine. Susan hopes that as a person considers a painting they are uplifted and see something new in it every time.

What medium/mediums do you use when you create?
Acrylic paint on smooth surfaces such as PVC or wood panels.

A Note from ArtsCharlotte

ArtsCharlotte community,

As many of you know, these months of the pandemic have been full of pushing back plans. We hoped we would be able to have some group gatherings here in the final months of the year, but have recognized that is not wise.

As we look forward to 2021, we continue to hold our plans lightly. We are considering some more opportunities for virtual connection and encouragement among artists of all kinds, including online book discussion groups, video studies, critiquing sessions and more. If you would be interested in participating in or helping to lead any of these groups, please reach out to us at info@artscharlotte.org.

We look forward to the day when we can meet face-to-face again.
